REN'S WORKBENCH

ABOUT REN & VAELRYS

“I didn’t start with a tutorial. I started with an idea and a piece of foam.”

My name is Ren. I've been building cosplay props for the better part of a decade. And if I'm honest — the first few years were mostly failure.

Not dramatic failure. Just the quiet, frustrating kind. Projects that got halfway done and then stopped because it hit a wall I didn't know how to get through. Builds that looked okay until they didn't. Materials that should have worked but didn't because I didn't fully understand what I was working with.

Vaelrys exists because of that gap. The gap between having the desire and having the system to turn the desire into something real.

THE TURNING POINT

The axe that changed everything.

About five or six years in I was building a Viking axe. Old style, the kind that looks like it was pulled out of a longship and used hard. I wanted the hammered metal texture, the worn wood grain on the handle, the sense that it had history in it.

I finished shaping it. I finished the detail work. And then something happened that hadn’t happened before on any of my builds! I looked at it and thought, this actually looks right.

Not right for foam. Not impressive for a beginner. Just right. The shape was what I imagined. The details landed where I wanted them. For the first time in years of building I felt like the thing in my hands matched the thing in my head.

I wanted to paint it. Properly. Not the way I’d been painting, which was more or less guessing with a brush...but really paint it to look like aged hammered metal.

“My uncle painted Warhammer miniatures. Competitions, display pieces, the kind of painting that makes you stop and look closer because you can’t believe the scale of the detail. I asked him to coach me.”

He sat down with me and the axe and walked me through the layering process. Basecoat. Dry brush. Wash. Highlight. The logic of how light falls on a surface and how paint can simulate that if you understand what you’re trying to recreate. It was the first time someone had explained the thinking behind the technique rather than just the steps.

That axe was the first build I ever genuinely wanted to show off. Not because it was technically perfect.... it wasn’t. But because for the first time I understood the process well enough to control the outcome. That feeling is what Vaelrys is built to give you on your first try.

THE VAELRYS DAGGER — WHAT THE SYSTEM PRODUCES.

THE PROBLEM

The part nobody fixes.

Here’s what I kept running into over the years. Not the building, the building I could figure out given enough time and failed attempts. What I couldn’t figure out efficiently was everything around the building.

Where do you actually get the right foam? Not craft store foam that falls apart but the right density, the right thickness, the right material for the specific thing you’re trying to make. The answer online is either buried in a forum post from eight years ago or scattered across twelve different videos that each assume you already know the other eleven.

What tools do you actually need versus what looks cool but aren’t? What paints behave correctly on sealed foam? What sealant works and what leaves your build cracking after a convention weekend? These are questions that seem basic until you realize you’ve spent three hours researching them and still aren’t sure.

The sourcing problem is real. And it’s the thing that stops more people from building than the craft itself ever does.

I watched this happen constantly. People with genuine talent and real vision who abandoned builds not because the craft defeated them but because the infrastructure around the craft defeated them. The wrong materials. The incomplete information. The absence of a starting point that actually worked.

I had accumulated that starting point over years of expensive trial and error. A sourcing system. A building process. A finishing sequence. A way of understanding the craft that made the outcome repeatable rather than accidental. I couldn’t figure out why that system didn’t exist as a product. So I built it.

THE VAELRYS VISION

This is what Vaelrys is building.

“The builder community has extraordinary talent. What it has never had is infrastructure that matches that talent. That’s the gap Vaelrys exists to fill....Permanently.”

Vaelrys started as a kit. One dagger. One course. One system. That’s still the foundation. But it’s not the ceiling. Here’s what we’re building toward.

01

THE KITS

A growing library of premium prop kits: daggers, armor pieces, full sets! Each one with a course built around it and a system designed for repeatable success.

02

THE SUPPLY STORE

A curated online store for cosplay materials. Not everything from everywhere...instead its the right things, sourced properly, with honest guidance on what to use and when.

03

THE COMPETITIONS

Design competitions where builders submit original prop blueprints. The best designs become Vaelrys kits. The designers get recognized and compensated.

04

THE CONVENTIONS

Eventually spaces where the Vaelrys community gathers in person. Competitions, workshops, masterclasses. A physical expression of everything we’re building digitally.

This is a ten to twenty year vision. We’re at the beginning of it. The people who are here now....who built in the first drops, who joined the community before it was anything are part of how this gets built.

That’s not marketing language. That’s just true.

WHO THIS IS FOR

Who Vaelrys is built for.

Vaelrys is not built for the builder who already has everything figured out. They have their suppliers, their process, their ten years of accumulated knowledge. They don’t need us and we’re not trying to convince them.

Vaelrys is built for the next generation. The person who has been watching builds online for months and keeps thinking I could do that but doesn’t know where the first step actually is. The person who tried once, hit a wall, and told themselves it wasn’t for them. The person who has the vision but not yet the system.

It’s also built for the builder who is good but wants to be better. Who has been producing decent work and wants to understand the gap between decent and genuinely impressive. Who knows the techniques exist but hasn’t found the teacher who explains the thinking behind them rather than just the steps.

The goal is to be the brand that serious builders trust from their first kit to their hundredth build. The brand that grows with you rather than one you grow out of.

That means Vaelrys has to be premium without being exclusive. Accessible without being cheap. The kind of brand that a beginner feels welcomed by and a veteran feels respected by simultaneously. That’s a harder thing to build than a kit. But it’s the thing worth building.

THE INVITATION

If you made it this far.

You now know more about why Vaelrys exists than most people ever will. You know about the failed projects. The Viking axe. My uncle and his Warhammer miniatures and the afternoon that changed how I understood paint. You know what we’re trying to build and why it matters and who it’s for.

If that story resonates, if some part of you recognizes your own experience in it, then Vaelrys was built for you.

The dagger kit is where it starts. One weekend. One build. Everything in the box. A course that explains the thinking, not just the steps. A community of builders who are figuring it out alongside you. And me, Ren, available by email, active in the calls, genuinely invested in the outcome of every single build that comes out of this first run.

This is the beginning of something. I’d like you to be part of building it.
