THE VAELRYS BUILDER COMMUNITY

“You’re not the only one figuring this out.”

Every builder who has ever stared at a piece of foam and wondered where to start has felt it. The isolation of figuring something out alone when it seems like everyone else already knows what they’re doing.

They don’t. Nobody did at the start. The difference between the builders who got good and the ones who stopped trying is almost never talent. It’s almost always access — to the right information, the right materials, and the right people to ask when things go wrong.

The Vaelrys Builder Community exists to close that gap. A free space for cosplay builders at every stage — beginners who have never touched foam, intermediate builders who want to go further, and serious craftspeople who want to push harder than they can alone.

WELCOME FROM REN — 90 SECONDS

A short video recorded at the workbench. What the community is for, who it’s built for, and the first thing to do when you get inside.

WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE

What happens inside.

The Vaelrys community is a Discord server — free to join, free to use, no subscription required. Here’s what you’ll find when you get inside.

BUILD PROGRESS

Post what you’re working on at any stage. Raw foam, shaped pieces, painting stages. Progress posts get real feedback and real encouragement.

REAL QUESTIONS

Ask anything. What foam density for a curved blade. What sealant holds up at a convention. Questions here get real answers from real builders.

FINISHED BUILD REVEALS

When you finish a build — post it. Every finished reveal gets celebrated. Every builder who posts a reveal is proof to the next person that it can be done.

DROP ACCESS

Community members hear about new kit drops before the public — days before the waitlist opens.

The channels are organized to make finding what you need fast. You’re never more than one click from the right conversation.

Just finished shaping the guard on my dagger. First time heat forming has actually gone the way I planned. Attaching a photo.

This looks incredible. What temperature were you running the heat gun at? Mine keeps going too soft.

Great shape on that curve — you can see you let it cool in position which makes all the difference. For temperature I run around 200°F and keep moving.

REN IN THE COMMUNITY

There’s a real person in here.

The Vaelrys community isn’t a support ticket system. It’s not a FAQ page with a chat widget. It’s a Discord server where Ren is on active, present member — posting, answering, reacting, and building alongside everyone else.

In the beginning that means daily. Questions get answered personally. Build photos get real feedback from the person who designed the kit. Drop announcements come with context and reasoning — why this design, why this timing, what’s coming next.

I built this community because I remember what it felt like to have no one to ask. I’m going to be the person in here that I wish existed when I was starting out.

As the community grows and experienced builders develop their own voice in the space, Ren’s role shifts — more present at key moments, less needed for every question because the community starts answering itself. That’s the goal. A community that doesn’t need its founder to function is a community that has truly been built.

But right now, at the beginning? You’re joining something small enough that Ren will see your post, know your name, and remember what you’re building. That kind of access doesn’t last forever. It’s available now.

Completely beginner question — do I need to sand the foam before I seal it? Every tutorial seems to assume I know this already.

R

Ren · Founder ★

Not a beginner question at all — this trips up a lot of people. Short answer: yes, lightly, with 220 grit. It closes the surface cells and helps the sealant bond cleanly. Without it you can get a slightly rough texture showing through the paint. Happy to walk you through the full sealing sequence if you want.

This is exactly what I needed. Thank you. Going in now.

THE FOUNDING MEMBER MOMENT

You’re early. That matters.

The Vaelris community is new. There are not thousands of members. There’s no archive of years of posts to scroll through. There’s no established hierarchy of who knows what.

What there is — is a beginning.

FOUNDING MEMBER STATUS

Every community that became something real started with a small group of people who found it before it was everywhere. Who showed up before it was safe to show up. Who helped build the culture before the culture existed.

The people who join the Vaelrys community right now are those people. Founding member status is permanent — visible on your profile, recognized in every future competition and event, and part of the story of how this community was built.

There’s no application. No criteria. No fee. You join now, you are a founding member. That’s it. The only thing that runs out is time.

THE ONLY RULE

The only rule.

The Vaelrys community has one rule and it covers everything else.

“No gatekeeping. Ever.”

Cosplay has a gatekeeping problem. It has always had a gatekeeping problem. The culture of experienced builders making beginners feel stupid for not knowing things they couldn’t possibly know yet is real and it has driven talented people away from a craft they would have loved.

Vaelrys is building a community where that doesn’t happen. Where the only stupid question is the one you didn’t ask because you were afraid of how it would land. Where a beginner’s first foam attempt gets the same celebration as a veteran’s masterpiece because both represent someone doing the thing.

If you come in here and make someone feel small for not knowing something — you won’t stay. That’s the whole policy. Everything else takes care of itself.

The craft is hard enough without the community making it harder. Vaelris is the community that makes it easier.
